According to the Global Dispatch, the Vietnamese police detained Truong Duy Nhat, 49 and a former journalist who ran a blog containing anti-state views, on Sunday May 26.

He was first detained at his home in Da Nang City and then soon transported to Ha Noi, as part of a widening crackdown on dissent in the Communist-run country, according to a Voices of America report.

Nhat was charged of “abusing democratic freedoms in order to infringe upon the interests of the state, the legitimate rights and interests of organizations and/or citizens” under article 258 of the criminal code.

However, Dong Phung Viet, another blogger, believes that the triggering factor was Nhat’s recent decision to conduct a public vote of confidence of members of the Communist leadership, modeled after the National Assembly’s announced plan to conduct a vote of confidence of government leaders by National Assembly members.

The results of this public opinion survey may have angered the leadership. At the time of Nhat’s arrest, his blog, titled “A Different View”, was immediately shut down. However, blogger Dong Phung Viet was able to capture the survey data and compiled them as follows.
