I Begin a Supportive Hunger Strike

From the blog of Pham Hong Son:

On June 08, 2013, the 13th day of hunger strike, on which a prisoner of conscience, Mr Cu Huy Ha Vu, has been going in prison since May 27, 2013 to protest illegal and inhumane conduct of the authorities, Tu Linh wrote an article proposing many ideas to support Mr Cu Huy Ha Vu’s brave protest. I do not think all of these ideas are feasible in or fit to the current circumstances/pro-democracy strugglers of Vietnam but I do agree to the main idea:

We – people aspiring to Freedoms and still un-imprisoned – should do more than writing or voicing for Mr Cu Huy Ha Vu’s life-risking action.

And so far there have been no signs to indicate Mr Vu stops hunger strike.

Therefore, I decide to begin a 7-day hunger strike at my home (No 21 Alley 72B, Thuy Khue Street, Hanoi), starting from June 10, 2013 through June 17, 2013, in order to express my admiration and support to Mr Vu and also to other Vietnamese non-violent strugglers.

I will maintain daily activities as normal as my health permits.

Though there may be other more effective methods than hunger strike and even other more impressive ways of hunger strike than mine to support Mr Cu Huy Ha Vu a personal, spontaneous hunger strike now seems the most feasible and effective to me in standing by Mr Cu Huy Ha Vu and other courageous fellow compatriots.

I do know there may be doubts on the authenticity of my hunger strike at home. These questions are reasonable and understandable. However I allow myself to entrust my absolute confidence in your absolute trust because I could not rely on any means of communication, both wire or wireless, due to the authorities’ capacity in absolute control. In addition, it is providing us a great opportunity to build up or strengthen self-confidence, mutual trust and the credibility for a progressive movement.
