The 61st Session on CEDAW (the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women) is now underway. In preliminary meetings, Ms. Khue-Tu Nguyen, a representative of Vietnamese Women for Human Rights (VNWHR), alerted the reviewing Committee of gross violations of women’s rights and treaty obligations. VNWHR has drawn special attention to the illegal status of independent rights groups like their own as well as to the large number of female prisoners of conscience and patterns of state-sponsored violence against female human rights defenders.

This Friday, July 10th, will be the review session for Vietnam. During the session, the CEDAW Committee and State Party will discuss reports submitted by the Vietnamese government, as well as feedback from civil society organizations, on the status of Convention implementation for Vietnam.  The meeting will conclude with a formal assessment and recommendations from the Committee.
