The Vietnam Civil Rights Project, which is part of BPSOS’s International Initiatives, aims to improve Vietnam’s enforcement of its existing laws by: (1) educating the public about their civil rights and ways to seek remedy under Vietnam’s domestic laws, (2) providing online consultation service, and (3) matching selected cases with pro bono legal services.

Responding to international pressure, Vietnam’s Constitution recognizes and guarantees most basic rights of citizens in accordance with international standards. However, in practice these rights are commonly abused by government authorities because of: (1) the authorities’ arbitrary interpretation of the laws, (2) the victims’ lack of understanding of their rights under the country’s legal framework, and (3) the general lack of independent legal aid services.
